About Bycyklen

The Copenhagen City Bike (Bycyklen) is the official urban bicycle system in the Danish metropolitan area, which is the fourth leg of the public transportation. The purpose of the system is to promote green and healthy transport as well as to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions.

All City Bikes are electric bikes and you can rent them from more than 130 City Bike Stations across Copenhagen, Frederiksberg and Rødovre. 46 of the city bike stations are located at DSB and metro stations so you can easily get to and from other public transportation. You have to download the Bycyklen app through App Store or Google Play to create an account and get access to the bicycles. In the app you will also be able to find nearest stations and bikes.

You can also find the City Bikes in the Itinerary when planning your next trip.

The bikes can take you far and you can drive right where you want, as long as you drop them off at a city bike station when your ride is over. The top speed of the bikes is 23 km/h. Going over this limit will cause the engine to shut down. A fully charged battery usually lasts for about 25 kilometers.

To rent one of the bikes, download the City Bike app, available on both App Store or Google Play. Here you choose the pricing model that best suits your needs and create a free City Bicycle account.

Once you create your account, the app can show you the way to the nearest available electric bike. Once you reach it, just start the tour. On our FAQ page you can find tips and tricks for using the electric City Bikes before, during and after your trip.

The city bike is non-profit and ALL profits from the City Bike system MUST be reinvested in green mobility. For example, it could be more City Bikes, better City Bikes, more City Bike Stations or lower user prices.

Contrary to popular belief, cycling is by the way active transportation, so driving an electric bicycle is included in the daily exercise accounts.

“We really want to break down the myths that it is the old and lazy people who ride electric bikes. It is a real alternative to a passive mode of transport - the car, ”says Gustav Friis, project manager at Smart Mobility.
